Lex LaFoy Releases Her 7th Body Of Work Titled The Lexikon 2.0 Project

Durban’s First Lady of Hip Hop, Lex LaFoy released her 7th recorded body of work titled The Lexikon 2.0 Project on Friday the 18th of October 2024.

Together with her lead producer, San Thurman, Lex LaFoy celebrates the release of music recorded over 10 years ago, caught in contractual issues, and later returned to her.

The album features Lia Butler, Zandra, iFani, Bongani Fassie, The Red Hillaz and her known bestie RubyGold - listeners can expect a combination of genres from Punk to RnB, Pop and Boombap -recored between 2012-2013.

“This body of work represents my lyrical median point, in the transformation from being Lexikon, to becoming Lex LaFoy”, the rapper says.

Lex LaFoy describes this 13 track album as a vital part of her journey, which she’s eager to finally share.

The completion of The Lexikon 2.0 Project is made possible with the support of the SAMRO Music Creation Support Fund (MCSF) 2023 for Heartistree Productions.

The Lexikon 2.0 Project was mixed and mastered by TeabagCC (Cultured Chaos) and Seemple (Dopesh*t Records).

SAMAs Relocate Amidst Controversy: A Shift in the Melodic Landscape

In an unexpected twist, the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) have decided to change their venue, much to the surprise and curiosity of Durban's residents and the nation at large. This change has come amidst mounting pressure from both politicians and local artists, who have voiced their concerns about the event's budget and the inclusion of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) artists.

T’zozo, a respected Durban Kwaito artist and Chairperson for the Cultural & Creative Industries Federation of South Africa (CCIFSA) in Durban, has been a vocal advocate for this cause. He emphasized the importance of KZN artists benefiting from the SAMAs and ensuring that the people of KZN truly feel the impact of the awards.

"We want our KZN artists to benefit, and we want the people of KZN to feel the SAMAs, hence we are saying we want to do activations in all 11 districts. We are in talks with the department and had a meeting with the SAMAs. If we [have] not agreed, there will be no SAMAs here in KZN," T’zozo stated.

This ongoing situation leaves a trail of unanswered questions and uncertainty surrounding the future of one of South Africa's most prestigious music events. The SAMAs have long been a celebration of the nation's rich and diverse music scene, and the decision to shift the venue amidst such controversy has left its future hanging in the balance.

In addition to the local dynamics, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in KwaZulu-Natal weighed in on the matter, welcoming the Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA)'s decision to cancel the SAMA hosting. The EFF expressed concerns about allocating a significant budget to a one-day event, particularly when the province faces pressing issues such as high unemployment, infrastructural challenges, and water shortages.
