On Sunday the 12th of February at 6pm, just two days after the tragic murder of rap superstar Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and his manager Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, fans gathered at the door of Wish Restaurant in Florida Road for a night vigil and prayer meeting, at the very spot where the incident took place.
Pastor Abraham Masinga welcomed everyone who came out in the rain and offered a sincere prayer for AKA and Tibz’s loved ones. He then went on to pray for an increase of peace within the city of Durban. Flowers were placed in front of pictures of AKA and Tibz with some present holding candles in respect for the two Hip Hop music and cultural pioneers.
The owner of Wish, Benny Maverick gave a heartfelt message about how he was the first Durbanite to ever book AKA for a performance in the city, and how their working relationship and friendship had grown over the years. So much so, that whenever AKA was in the city - he’d frequent his restaurant. The Supa Mega made his way to Wish earlier on Friday evening the 10th of February to have supper, and was scheduled to perform at Yugo nightclub afterwards as part of his extended national birthday celebration. Just after saying his goodbye’s outside Wish, AKA and Tibz were both shot dead by a man on foot, who aimed for the two men at close range. The killer then fled off, getting into one of three getaway vehicles. How this could happen when there is a satellite police office just across from Wish - is beyond us.
AKA had turned 35 on the 28th of January. His untimely passing came just two weeks prior to his set release date for his fourth studio album titled Mass Country. DJ Sox, Tzozo and Skye Wanda were also among those who came out to show their respects.
