Editors-in-Chief
Summer is around the corner and with this issue we want to reflect on what the year has brought forth. Firstly, we would like to wish all students going through exams the best of luck and let them know that the best is yet to come. To see where we are going we need to know where we’re coming from and if 2020 is anything to go by then we’re in for one amazing festive season. As the laws of the universe state...for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction.
Our November cover star is the dzaddiest of them all. We called this issue the SAMA issue not only because is it the beginning of Summer but we also have the SAMA award winning Yanga Chief on our cover. From successful job hunting to fitness, to make up and beauty as well as some awesome mixes, Youff magazine’s got you. UJohn esezoli vula i-gate.

Tech It or Leave It: Voice Computer | Youff Mag
Ok, Google “open deeplyroated.co.za” For once let’s put the phone vs android talk aside.
Lets talk about some things that involve Amazon the retail and Web services giant. Voice controlWhether you ok, google; Alexa or Hey Siri, you are part of this technologies adolescence stage. The point where it works, but is not perfect.
Before we dive into which is better than which, let's talk about why would we ever be speaking to our computers, phones, tv's and tablets? Because convenience.
There are those moments when your hands have soap, or your nails are not dry or your bike chain broke and basically your hands shouldn’t be touching your phone. At the same time you really want to listen to that new Nasty C so you yell “Hey Siri, Ply that new Nasty C album on Spotify“. Just like that, you have given a command to your machine.
Ever since Siri was introduced by apple in 2011 there has been a growing trendof personal a.i. assistants. From app Bixby, (horrible thing), to Ok, google (the best voice recognition such Alexa possibly the next best thing for voice computing.
What amazon did was bridge what we do naturally when we speak, we listen and thats what Alexa was made to do, listen to voice commands then deliver an amazon package, with something cheap and amazon branded involved there. Jokes aside, the first world countries you can order batteries and get them delivered to your door without pressing a button.
This is the power of voice and as the technology progresses we will be able to lock our doors, turning off lights as well as parking our cars into the garages.
But let us bring it back to today. How can you get involved ?You already have the power of voice in your pocket whether Android or iOS, then you are the exciting part, (and this is if You have home wifi setup for your devices) you can get an A.I enable speaker like Alexa, while who she is popular, I feel she just isn't that bitch in Southy. What I would Recommend for Android users google home or he google home mini which is cheaper.
Let's talk about the home mini a quick google scorch puts it at R999. It's cut made of fabric looks like it belongs in a nice hotel room and in a messy room like mine. Room Usb-c charge so it can go to a corner of the room.“ok, google” the weather, sports match and yes make it play your fave tunes on the fly.
Okay so on to Real tech, (sorry android users)a cheaper version of the homepod correctly named home pod mini this small ball is an spacial orgasm of ball that is siri enabled. Like the google mini it is also covered in a neat fabric that looks 2035.All I can say is woah. I'm going to be a lazy Journalist and Just Link here.
To close off your voice is not going to replace your keyboard Just yet, but it is a cool and interesting way to send commands to your machine. Like I said voice has a convince element and while you gain convince you lose accuracy. It’s easier to tell a speaker to play South African music than it is to tell it exactly what song to play like it is when you search for a song using your keyboard on Tidal.
All of these things are just affected by your positioning around your devices and your priority to the task you need computed. I still think talking to my devices to get them to open apps and search google is pretty cool and as the technology gets better we will be able to do even more convenient things by using the best instrument ever made… our voices.
Trial and Error... Let's Try Agin | Youff
Trial and Error... Let's Try Again
by Londeka Sishi
I'm pretty sure that most of us can attest to the idea that life is merely a game of trial and error. Much like the Idea that One has to kiss a few frogs before stumbling across "The one". It's safe to say that when it comes to the soul's human excursion, there's very little certainty
Now imagine being in that loop of discovery as an adult, still blinking in the dark and knocking your head on a few walls, trying to feel your way around, only to find yourself with an added responsibility of a "mini you"
Yes, not only do you need to worry about your stomach growling and wardrobe switch ups, now you need to think for a tiny person a.k.a your bundle of joy, whose most advanced communication tool is crying at the top of their voice.
This by far has been one of my greatest challenges as a young mother. Learning how to pick my Toddler's brain. Trying to derive and entire sentence or request from one long and loud sound. I've done it all from self help books, to tutorials and doccies on infants and none of them have brought me to the perfect solution.
The bravest thing I believe I did was admitting that this is always going to be a first time experience regardless of how many babies I had or even plan to have. Developing a love for the art of preparing your mind to soak up information is an incredible survival tool in this here world of parenting, because the truth of the matter is, you don't know... you may have an idea at times, but to say you're 100% certain could be a life threatening gamble.
The unspeakable gift of being able to physically become a warm and loving home for the formation of an infinite possibility is mind blowing. The mere thought of having my body become a cocoon to help God mould and perfect an entire life is one that I will forever humbly marvel at. Ultimately, the love pinnacle that one gets to be immersed in throughout that process is unmatched.
When all is said and done, you know somewhere deep down that there isn't a thing you would not do for these little ones. In as much as life is a pending blob, you can always allow yourself to be taught by the one you gave life to, how to help them curate their life, after all, life is a game of trial and error. is continued.

Art by Nhlakanipho Mkhize
Nhlakanipho Mkhize chose the theme of child soldiers because his father was a soldier, whom died due to the war between the ANC and IFP. He grew up wanting to be a soldier as well, but found his love behind the brush.
In Abadobi, Nhlaka recreates the image of a young girl holding a gun to the girl holding a fishing rod. “My aim was to change the narrative and allow the viewer to see the girl as a fisher rather than a soldier because she could be anything that she wants if she wasn’t forced to kill”.
The artist also mentions that the above image is his way of allowing the world to see Africa for what it really is. “We shouldn’t hide that child soldiers exist in Africa and that these kids are taught to defend themselves at an early age. However, it doesn’t have to remain that way.”
“As a creative I’m afraid of the colonisation of culture and it remains my duty to ensure that I preserve it through art and showing our true potentials while maintaining the black child’s identity”.
