Perfectly Perfect Kamo | Youff Feature

The internet has birthed users to stardom and Kamogelo Mphela is one of them. From a simple video upload on twitter to jet setting across the country, her career in the entertainment industry boomed after the video went viral. Soweto born and bred, Kamo Mphela can only be described in one word- hard work! Her accolades which include her songs amanikiniki and sbwl both gunning for the 2020 song of the year title, prove that if hard work was a person, it would be Kamo Mphela. Although Kamo had initially wanted to be a radio DJ, life simply had other plans for her. " I never thought i would have a dancing career, it was more of a talent than it was really a…

dream of making it a career. Although I've always wanted to be a radio personality,i wanted to be a radio DJ, But it just happened that my dancing career came before I could pursue that” said Mphela. Her hard work ethic and passion for what she does has her heart set in stone in what she does. “I won’t pursue being a DJ, ill rather stick to what people know me for. Apart from confusing people, I don’t want to be a jack of all trades, master of none”.

Nothing that comes easy, is easy to keep and Kamo can attest to that as the entertainment industry is notorious in changing ones identity and brand.

The era of ama2K brought an evolution to the music scene SA, and Mphela was not shy in garnering success during this phase as a young, gifted and black artist. “Even if I wanted to deny that it hasn’t, my age has kind of helped to put me in the position that I’m in, even though some people didn’t take me seriously a year ago. For us ama2K it can be very hard. And I’m not a 2K!” Exclaimed Mphela.

It wasn’t long before the star started rubbing shoulders with SA’s a-listers, each passing down wisdom to Kamo. “The best advice I’ve received was from DJ Zinhle and she said it’s all good and well to have friends, it’s all good and well to be cool with people, but you should never do anything that sacrifices you.”

And speaking of advice, what advice would Kamo give to young girls looking up to her? “I

would advise them to work hard, don’t expect handouts, and to create opportunity because

this industry won’t open up unless you force way into it.”

It’s true that if your dreams don’t scare you, then they aren’t big enough, and on Kamo’s checklist is being the biggest international star from SA and bagging a dance tour in conjunction with MacDonalds. Despite the pandemic being a hindrance, Kamo set time aside to grow herself as artsis and honed her talent. With her eye on the prize in having one of her songs as song of the year, it seems like a new year’s kiss is not in her books.
